After spending two weeks in Rome, I've encountered some beautiful restaurants with some of the most surprising combinations and delicious ingredients. Food is exciting to me. Food is beautiful and speaks measures on culture and pride. The best way to understand a city is through food. To receive full experience is to eat without hesitation. No calories left behind! I wish I had read more about the cuisine and what to order before I got here. In this blog, I want to share some of my experiences with food.
In our first week here, discovering places was difficult because we didn't know where to go. We did not realize how Italians dined. We also did know how affordable restaurants are in Rome. I appreciate the respect Italians have for cuisine. Here restaurants are not a lucrative business venture. It is life. Business owners seem to care more for their customers as if feeding them is more of a payoff than a check.
My first meal in Rome was at a restaurant by our school, "Ristochicco." We had an appetizer- Bread with olive oil, truffle, and cheese. Then we had the second course, which was pasta. To my surprise, the pasta was cold. Despite my unfamiliarity with cold pasta, it was delightful. Its located near Piazza Navona. I've visited three times since my first experience, and it's been excellent every time. Unfortunately, it's never as full as it should be; it is one of Rome's best restaurants.
The most memorable experience in Rome has been Cafe de saint bon! I have the fondest memories here with my roommates. Every Morning we stop by before school or wherever we are going and load up on cappuccinos and croissants. (side note- I hate how chocolate croissants and flavored croissants here are plain croissants sliced in the center with a flavor filling in the middle, and Cafe De Saint Bon doesn't do that. Here they serve the real pain au chocolat.) ALSO, WHEN IN ROME EAT A BAMBOLONI! Cafe de saint bon has the best.
Osteria dal 1931 is a restaurant I went to because of the Rome episode of Parts unknown. For the first plate, I ordered prosciutto and artichoke for an appetizer. (amazing). Second, I ordered ravioli with tomato and basil, and ricotta (beautiful)—third plate chicken steak and sage. The most delicious, fantastic, perfect tasting chicken I've ever put in my mouth; it was so good. Honestly, I could eat there on a daily.
Finding food is easy, and sometimes you find a meal you think is excellent until you experience something that changes your perception of all other places you've been. I hope to see more of those places!
